2007 South America MapIn 2006 Mike and Rene Van Pelt completed a 1 year, 30,000 miles expedition travel throughout South America driving one of our GXV expedition vehicles. They started their adventure by shipping their expedition vehicle, which they proudly called KOLOB, from Miami to Lima, Peru. Their expedition journey route began in Peru and continued down to Chile, Bolivia, Paraguay, Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, and back to Chile, Peru and then to Ecuador. They also had great adventure while visiting Antarctica, Easter Island and the Galapagos Islands. Their return shipping was from Ecuador to Mexico, and the last leg of their trip was then from Mexico to home. See their expedition journey in its entirely

Below are Just a few highlights of the GXV Vehicle Expedition to South America According to Mike

Traveling in South America with my expedition vehicle I found out the one thing that all the countries had in common. In all of them that I visited with my wife, the people were extremely friendly. They not only wanted to see the truck but also get to know us. It was certainly a wonderful experience!

Nazca Monkey

PERU: In Peru I was amazed to see that the Nazca Lines, huge geometric shapes of animals and humans made by the Nazca culture on the ground between 200 BCE and 700 CE, not only existed on the flat areas of the Nazca desert, where the access should be supposedly easier, but also on the side of the hills in Bolivia and North of Chile. This is, for sure, an intriguing historical mystery!

Bolivia Expedition

BOLIVIA: In Bolivia some people chew Coca leaves. They told me that it works just like an energy drink, so I had to try chewing some. The one thing that I did find out is that you definitely would have to get used to the taste, but It is totally worth trying it!

Bolivian Weaving-1

Paraguay TrinidadJesuit Ruins

PARAGUAY: In Paraguay we had the opportunity to visit the CHACO area. In this area we got to visit a Mennonite community named Filadelfia. Although the soil of this area is really rough and not good for raising crops, they have managed to transform this location into an incredibly productive area using an advanced irrigation system and being very organized. They are extremely interesting people.

Bridal Veil Falls

BRAZIL: Brazil is like visiting 3 or 4 different countries at one time. One part is totally different versus other parts. After visiting, I believe that the country of Brazil will be a world leader within this century. The people are productive, the government is good, and they have a good infrastructure (in some areas) with incredible natural resources. It is an outstanding country!

Rio Cable Car

Montevideo-2Uruguay: Uruguay is cheap and safe. While exploring the country I did not have in the back of my mind that I had to be on guard; I felt always very safe. In Uruguay I had a great time relaxing on their beautiful hot springs.

Argentina Patagonia

ARGENTINA: In one word, PATAGONIA.
I don’t think that anybody can explain the feeling that they get in Patagonia. The landscape, flora and fauna can change a person. It is very much like stepping back in time to a place that you have dreamt or heard about but never actually got to see . . . . .

Ant Devils Island

ANTARCTICA: Antarctica will consistently remind you that that nature is definitely in control and that you are human and the guest of the Mother Nature.

Adelie Penguins

CHILE: Traveling in Chile felt just like traveling in America. I believe that it was the easiest country for travel in South America. The gas stations and grocery stores were all incredibly similar to America.

Chile Patagonia Expedition RV

Tongariki-3EASTER ISLAND: I was amazed to see how small and deserted this island is . The whole island is only 50,000 acres. It is the most remote place on earth; there is no other island around it and it is located over than 2,000 miles from Chile. It is Incredible!

Tongariki Rainbow

Ecuador Sunset

ECUADOR: Ecuador, in my opinion, is the most diverse country in South America. It gives you the feeling that it is magical. They have four distinctive areas: the Amazon, the Andes Mountains, The coastal areas and the Galapagos Islands. Each area is totally different with the people and the geography being so diverse. It is an extraordinary journey through Ecuador!

Galapagos Marine IguanaGALAPAGOS ISLANDS: In Galapagos everything above or below the ocean is speechless beautiful! I will never forget the extraordinary diversity of wildlife that I saw exploring the island and the variety of sea life while snorkeling. It is for sure a unique experience. I recommend Ecuador to everybody!
